The title is a pun and an accurate one. Leave it there.
The poem opens in a recognisable Scandinavia — Westeros is invoked not for decoration but because the comparison is geographically honest. A winter of indeterminate length that everyone knows is coming. The chopping of wood in summer is not romantic, it is the seasonal economy stated plainly.
The discipline lines are argument that in climates where survival required it, discipline cannot be claimed as a virtue. It was simply the condition. Those without it are not here to disagree. "Self deception survival" sits alongside this as necessary psychological adjustment, stated without shame.
The seasons are genuinely loved, the contrasts cherished. The autumnal sunset as the single marker of summer's end is observed, and "astral lights of the soul" speaks to the dark beauty of freezing nights.
Spring arrives in two movements — first the flowers, listed with their colours, then the body's own announcement that winter is over. The clothes come off. It is Easter.
The changed boxers are the resurrection. The poem means this seriously and lightly at the same time, which is the not an uncorrect register. JC and the speaker are placed alongside each other without hierarchy. Springsteen is quoted as a kind of secular amen.
The closing image — granite, fecund, subarctic, wasteland — holds the poem's central contradiction. Life in unlikely conditions.
